More than a job: how PALM scheme workers like Ilai are driving toward independence

For many workers under the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme, coming to Australia is more than just a job, it's a journey toward personal growth, independence and valuable life skills.

For Ilai, an Early Childhood Educator from Papua New Guinea based in Katherine on a four-year visa, that journey recently reached a new milestone: earning his Australian driver’s licence.

Support that makes a difference

With the support of his employer, the PALM scheme’s Skills Development Program, and his own determination, Ilai’s path to driving has been smooth, empowering him with greater mobility and self-reliance in remote Northern Territory.

“The funding process was incredibly straightforward,” Ilai’s employer said. “It was easy to access, the application was simple, and the PALM scheme team [Department of Employment and Workplace Relations] were quick to respond. Ilai was given all the information he needed and was able to book his training and test with a local provider who regularly visits Katherine.”

Gaining skills for life

This kind of training support is a key feature of the PALM scheme, which brings workers from the Pacific and Timor-Leste to regional Australia to fill essential roles, not just to work, but to thrive. PALM scheme workers have access to a wide range of development opportunities, including budgeting workshops, English language support, and driver education, all aimed at setting them up for long-term success both in Australia and back home.

For Ilai, obtaining his licence has opened new doors.

“Now I can explore Katherine on my days off, get to appointments, run errands, and just feel more independent,” he said. “It makes a big difference, especially when living and working in a remote place.”

Building futures through the PALM scheme

Ilai’s story is a powerful reminder that with the right support, and a lot of heart, PALM scheme workers are building more than careers in Australia. They’re building skills, confidence, and brighter futures.
