The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) recently hosted its seventh Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme Regional Engagement Forum (PREF) in South Australia, held on Erawirung Country in Renmark, Paringa.
These forums are designed to bring together PALM scheme workers, employers, and regional stakeholders to share experiences, strengthen relationships, and promote best practices in worker support and community integration.
A region built on labour and land

Set along the banks of the Murray River, the Riverland region is a vibrant example of the PALM scheme’s contribution to Australia’s horticulture, agriculture and viticulture industries. The importance of these sectors is evident in the flourishing crops that line the roads, testament to the hard work of PALM scheme participants and the employers who support them.
A welcome rooted in culture and storytelling
The event opened with a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony led by Daniel Giles, First Nations representative of the Nganguruku, Ngintait and Yankunytjatjara peoples. Daniel spoke about the importance of storytelling and the next generation, themes brought to life by a performance from a local Indigenous youth dance group.
Workers share their voices and pride
PALM scheme workers from across South Australia and nearby Mildura, Victoria, attended in strong numbers. Many shared traditional songs and hymns in their native languages, expressing cultural pride and creating a meaningful exchange with the local community. The forum also provided an opportunity for workers to learn more about the scheme and the support services available to them.
Employers exchange insights and strengthen networks
Employers participated in discussions about recent changes to the PALM scheme, connected with peers, and shared best practices for supporting worker wellbeing. The forum reinforced the importance of collaboration in ensuring positive outcomes for both workers and employers.
