PALM scheme Regional Engagement Forums (PREFs) bring together workers, employers, government representatives and community organisations to strengthen local connections and support positive outcomes for PALM scheme communities.
PREFs give workers and employers the opportunity to connect directly with government and local service providers, access practical information and support, ask questions and build relationships within their local community. They also create a space to share experiences, learn from each other and strengthen the networks that support workers during their time in Australia.
The Bundaberg PREF was held over 2 days in September 2026, with one day focused on worker wellbeing, connection and access to information and support, and one dedicated to local PALM scheme employers.
Looking after yourself and each other
The worker day began with a Welcome to Country, prayer and devotion, followed by a warm welcome from Bundaberg Councillor Tracey McPhee.
More than 130 PALM scheme workers attended the day. Following a community barbecue morning tea, workers took part in an interactive wellbeing session led by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR).
Activities focused on setting personal goals, overcoming challenges, building support networks and knowing where to seek help when needed. Workers shared experiences and practical strategies for looking after their wellbeing while living and working away from home.
Connecting with support services
Information sessions throughout the day gave workers the opportunity to meet representatives from government agencies and community organisations, ask questions and find out more about services available to support them.
Topics included community safety, physical and mental health, visas, tax, health insurance and worker support services.
Pacific Island Police Liaison Officers shared information about domestic and family violence, community support, road safety and reporting criminal activity. They also led practical activities, including an impairment goggle demonstration that encouraged discussion about drink driving and making safe decisions.
DEWR also provided information about grievance processes, support services and the role of country liaison officers in supporting PALM scheme workers while they are living and working in Australia.
PALM scheme employers supporting workers through strong partnerships
The employer day focused on strengthening support and promoting positive outcomes for PALM scheme workers. Ten PALM scheme employers from the Bundaberg region attended.
The day gave employers an opportunity to connect directly with government representatives and local service providers, ask questions, share experiences with other employers and learn more about the support available to PALM scheme workers in their region.
Representatives from DEWR, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Department of Home Affairs provided updates on PALM scheme initiatives and discussed worker wellbeing, compliance, training and skills development, worker preparation and reintegration support.
Employers also heard from local community organisations about available services, including health, welfare and other community services.
The ‘You Can’t Ask That’ session provided an opportunity for employers to ask questions, share experiences and discuss practical challenges directly with government and other organisations involved in supporting the PALM scheme.
Building stronger communities
Throughout both days, the Bundaberg PREF reinforced the importance of strong partnerships between workers, employers, government agencies and local service providers.
By bringing these groups together in one place, PREFs help strengthen relationships, increase awareness of available support and create valuable local connections that can continue beyond the event.
Thank you to all workers, employers, presenters and stakeholders who contributed to the success of the Bundaberg PREF. Their enthusiasm, participation and commitment to worker wellbeing helped make the event a valuable opportunity for learning, collaboration and strengthening the partnerships that support PALM scheme workers across the Bundaberg region.
